Filing in New York County, step by step
Every step below happens at New York City Civil Court, New York County - Small Claims Part or through the system it uses.
- 1. Check the amount is within the limit. New York County small claims handles claims up to $10,000 (exclusive of interest and costs). Above that, the case belongs in a different division and the clerk will refuse it.

What happens after you file
